General information about Ethiopia….

I came across this booklet that gave some good general facts about Addis & Ethiopia in general–I found some of it to be very interesting and thought i would share it with you-

Size of Ethiopia: 490,000 sq miles (little less than twice the state of Texas or equivalent to Britian and France combined). It divided into 9 ethnically based states plus 2 self governing administrations (Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa each with a right to self-determination.

Altitude of Addis Ababa ranges rom 7000-8500 feet. 3rd highest Capital  city in the world. Its set against the backdrop of the Entoto Mountain Range and is home to 5.8 million people.

Climate in Addis:Oct-Feb-dry season 68-73 degrees–Feb-June weather is unpredictable known as the short rainy season—June-Sept-known as the long rainy season  when it is cooler and damp (*side note by libby-we have had AWESOME weather so far-we have seen lots of sunshine and no rain…they promise it will rain though :) )

Economy:Ethiopia’s economy is based on subsistence agriculture, which accounts for almost ½ of the country’s GDP, 60% of exports and 80% of total employment. The agriculture sector suffers from frequent drought and poor cultivation practices. Coffee is critical to the Ethiopian economy with exports of some $350 million in 2006. A small industrial sector centers on food processing, beverages, the production of cotton goods, cigarettes, and chemicals, metals processing, cement and plywood.

People and languages: Ethiopia is one of the oldest independent states in the world, It was established as a highly developed Christian culture in the 4 Century AD. There are over 70 ethnic groups who speak more than 80 languages in the country.

Calendar & Time: (*Libby side note: I find this very interesting) Ethiopia follows the Julian calendar which consists of 12 months of 30 days each and a 13th month of 5 days. The Ethiopian calendar is  7years and 8 months behind the Gergorian calendar that we follow in the states. New years is on Sept 11th.

In Ethiopia the day begins at sunrise or 6am and they begin counting the hours from this point. So 8am is 2am to an Ethiopian. This continues until 6pm which is 12 pm and then counting begins again 7pm is 1pm and 10 pm is 4 pm, etc.

Names in Ethiopia: When an Ethiopian is born the child receives a given name from his/her parents or grandparents. The child 2nd name is his/her father’s given name & a 3rd name is the childs paternal grandparents given name . There are no lastnames. They use their given name and fathers name for everyday use.

Many christian Ethiopians have the same prefixes in their names such as Gebre(servant of), wolde (son of), Tesfa(hope of), Haile (power of), Habte (gift of), Tigist (patience of).
