A Voice for the Mute

A fellow DTS student convicted me last night about our God-given responsibility to “speak up for those without a voice.” Proverb 31:8-9 commands us:

Open your mouth for the speechless,

In the cause of all who are appointed to die.

Open your mouth,

judge righteously,

And plead the cause of the poor and needy.

I am reminded of a man I have come to admire for his willingness to admit fault, for unwavering faith in the midst of great tribulation inflicted by the Nazis, and a man who by the grace of God persevered through years of German concentration camp: MARTIN NIEMÖLLER. He is known for the following, chilling quote:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out– Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out– Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out– Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.

Think we have no voice? Rethink! Even our very presence speaks. “Show up” at the local safe house or pour coffee for a homeless brother at www.ourcalling.org, and you’ve taken a public stance. …who can be against us? (Rom 8:31)
