YAHWEH – The Great “I AM” 2nd Kids Quest

Our 2nd kids quest was once again full of 15 friends, tons of fun and learning more about Gods names. We started the evening off reciting our verses from last week (way to go everyone – Mr. Falk and I were very impressed with how well you guys learned your verses – keep up the good work for next time!!). Tonight we talked about the covenant (promise keeping), eternal name of God: YAHWEH!  While we understand Elohim (from last kids quest) as the  creator, we learned that the name Yahweh expresses the personal aspect of the creating God. Yahweh seeks covenant relationship with His people; He is involved in His creation. Yahweh is holy (which means set apart) and demands that we approach Him in a respectful and reverent way. He refers to himself as “I am” (the Israelites would refer to Him as “He is” b/c He is eternal, without a beginning or end. Yahweh is perfect in every regard. No single term describes Him sufficiently, and so His name is best represented by “I am.”

Story time: We enjoyed a skit which described the first time God refers to himself as “I AM” and displayed His ultimate power. We read through the third chapter of Exodus as we watched Moses approach a burning bush that would not be consumed. Yahweh IS self-existent and unchanging…everything we need for every situation we will ever face! What a comforting name to be able to call our God!

Games: Tonight was all about watermelon :) We “tried” to have a watermelon spitting contest (never crossed my mind that the kids might find spitting the seeds a little challenging- lol) we resorted to trying to throw the seeds onto the target aiming for the bull’s eye. We had slippery watermelon relays thanks to dish soap, and finished off the evening bowling with the watermelons before they started to crack open!

Crafts: we assembled “I Am” bracelets or bookmarks to help us remember the name “I Am.”

Next time: Don’t forget to bring a friend, and be working on your verses.

Below you’ll see the condensed version of our verse for the week to help the kids be able to learn it.

I am the beginning and the end; the one who was, and is, and is to come…”    Revelation 1:8
